Find the error: subtraction across zeros

A find-the-error worksheet for regrouping through a zero, like 400 − 156 or 3,005 − 1,278. Each problem shows a student's worked solution with one planted mistake; students find the wrong step, name the misconception and solve it correctly. The answer key is computed, so it is always right.

Mistakes this sheet plants

  • Subtracted the smaller digit from the larger. Where the top digit was smaller, the student flipped the subtraction instead of regrouping.Example: 8,802 − 3,699 worked to 5,297 instead of 5,103.
  • Left the zero as 10 after regrouping through it. Regrouping through a 0 turns it into 10 and then gives 1 to the next place, so it ends as 9, not 10.Example: 500 − 285 worked to 225 instead of 215.
