Find the error: comparing decimals

A find-the-error worksheet for which is greater, 0.45 or 0.5? The two classic decimal misconceptions. Each problem shows a student's worked solution with one planted mistake; students find the wrong step, name the misconception and solve it correctly. The answer key is computed, so it is always right.

Mistakes this sheet plants

  • Thought more digits means a bigger number. Comparing the digits after the point as whole numbers ignores place value. Write both with the same number of decimal places first.Example: Which is greater: 0.7 or 0.351? worked to 0.351 instead of 0.7.
  • Thought tenths always beat hundredths. A number with only tenths is not automatically bigger. Write both with the same number of decimal places, then compare.Example: Which is greater: 0.4 or 0.45? worked to 0.4 instead of 0.45.
